Gold Mining And Sluicing

Reading time: 2 – 4 minutes

If you have ever heard about the California gold rush during the 1840’s then you probably know that a lot of people took big chances on going there to get rich with gold. Whenever people mention gold or gold coins, images of money, wealth and power comes into mind.

Well, gold has existed for thousands of years as a symbol of personal wealth. And that is why today there are still people that are traveling across the country and combing the lands for that elusive gold nugget that can make them rich. Gold mining is not just a business, but for some people, it is a profitable hobby as well.

Mining for gold involves a lot of different methods which if you learn them properly can really be a start of a good business. The first and simplest method is gold panning. This method uses a pan to sift away rock, other sediments and leave the gold nugget under the pan. Since gold is a metallic element it will sink to the bottom making it easier for you to spot it.

Gold panning is usually done in a river or a stream where there is a continuous flow of water. A good place to start panning is to find a water source that is next to a gold mine. Chances are, there will be some undiscovered gold nuggets that might be lying on the riverbed. The gold that you will get is called a slit and is usually slightly smaller than gold found in mines.

Another method of gold mining is sluicing. This method involves the use of water channels to flush out unwanted sediments and filter other materials. After this process, whatever is left behind is probably gold. This system is much easier to employ and is most likely to be fully automated. Sluicing is used by large-scale mining operations.

Of course, aside from the methods mentioned above, there is also hard rock mining. This type of mining requires drills and hammers to physically find and extract gold from the mine. As you would imagine, this method has produced most of the gold in the world today. This method is usually done manually but can be very profitable if done well with the proper mining equipment.

Another gold mining method is when gold is extracted as a byproduct together with other metals in silver and copper mines. Some sediments of gold are gathered in mines where silver and copper are the major metals found.

Once the gold is collected from the mines, it undergoes a procedure called cyanidation to filter it out from the carbon elements that are attached to it. Several chemicals such as hydrochloric and nitric acid are used to do this.

There are certainly a lot of different methods employed to find and extract gold from mines. And with the simplest method mentioned above, you can also join in to find gold in local mines or rivers in your area. There are still probably a lot undiscovered gold nuggets lying around and waiting for you to discover them.
